Malbork Castle – The Largest Brick Castle in the World

The History of Malbork Castle

Towering over the banks of the Nogat River, the monumental Malbork Castle is the largest medieval castle in the world. Built at the end of the 13th century by the Teutonic Order, it initially served as the residence of the Komtur (Commander). In 1309, it became the headquarters of the Grand Master and the capital of the Teutonic State.

For nearly 150 years, it was the administrative and military center of the Order, undergoing expansions that included the High Castle, Middle Castle, and Outer Bailey.

During the Thirteen Years' War, the castle was not taken by storm. It was only in 1457, through an agreement with mercenaries, that it was transferred to Polish King Casimir IV Jagiellon.

For the next three centuries, it served as one of the royal residences of Polish kings, symbolizing the power of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the north.

After the First Partition of Poland in 1772, the castle fell into neglect under Prussian rule. Fortunately, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, extensive conservation work restored its original Gothic character, and a castle museum was established within its walls.

At the end of World War II, the castle suffered significant damage, but post-war reconstruction restored its former glory.

Since 1961, the castle has functioned as a museum, and in 1997, the Malbork Castle Complex was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The castle museum features an extensive collection of historical artifacts: knightly armor, weapons, ceramics, stained glass, sculptures, and the famous amber exhibition. It is one of the most fascinating places in Malbork, offering insight into the history of the Teutonic Order and the daily life of medieval knights.

Visitors can explore the castle with a guide or an audioguide, available in multiple languages. This interactive tool leads you through the different sections of the High Castle, recreating the sounds of battles, medieval music, and the conversations of former castle residents.

Thanks to this, you can immerse yourself in the past when the Teutonic castle attracted knights and merchants from across Europe.

Interesting Facts About Malbork Castle

  1. The Largest Castle in the World: The Malbork fortress is the most extensive medieval castle in the world – the entire castle complex covers approximately 21 hectares and was built using an impressive 30 million bricks. This remarkable record makes Malbork the most powerful brick fortress of medieval Europe.

  2. Gothic Madonna: The facade of the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the High Castle is adorned with a monumental figure of the Virgin Mary with Child. This 8-meter-high statue, covered with colorful mosaic, is one of the largest medieval depictions of Mary. Although the original was severely damaged in 1945, it was meticulously reconstructed and, since 2016, visitors can once again admire the Madonna in all her glory.

  3. A Secret Toilet (Gdanisko): The castle hides its own medieval restroom – a tower called gdanisko, which functioned as a latrine. Interestingly, the path to this toilet was indicated by carved little devils on the wall brackets, whose tails pointed the way for users. This clever system directed waste straight into the castle moat and then into the river, ensuring a level of hygiene uncommon in medieval times.

  4. An Unconquered Fortress: Throughout the Middle Ages, Malbork was considered an impregnable stronghold. The castle was besieged multiple times but was never taken by force – even during the Great War with the Teutonic Order or the siege following the Battle of Grunwald. In 1457, it was finally captured through trickery: Polish forces exploited the fact that the Teutonic garrison had not paid their mercenaries and bought the castle for the equivalent of 665 kilograms of gold instead of storming it.

  5. Ghosts of the Grand Masters: A legend surrounds Malbork's walls about the restless spirits of Teutonic dignitaries. In St. Anne's Chapel (the necropolis of the Grand Masters), there is a mysterious wall with two openings. According to local lore, these openings cannot be sealed because they serve as passageways for the ghosts of the deceased Grand Masters, who continue to guard the castle's treasures and secrets. To this day, tour guides eagerly share this eerie tale, adding a thrill to the castle tour.
