The History of Banino - From a Small Village to a Dynamic Suburb of Gdańsk

Banino , today one of the most dynamically developing suburbs of Gdańsk, has a long and rich history. The first mention of this town dates back to 1283 , when the name "Banino" was written down.

The word comes from the word "bania" , which originally meant a pit or mine - a reference to the old ore mines and gravel pits in these areas. In later years, from 1789 , the names "Banin" and "Bullenbrock" were also used.

Princely donation for the Cistercians of Oliwa

In 1283, Duke Mestwin II gave Banino to the Cistercian monastery in Oliwa in exchange for the Gniew Land . At that time, it was a small peasant settlement, operating under Polish law, standing out from other properties of the Oliwa convent.

The Cistercians built a church here under the invocation of St. Michael , known as the "Baniński church" . Unfortunately, the building disappeared in unexplained circumstances and was not mentioned in the bishops' visitation documents in the 16th century.

Changes and development over the centuries

In 1717, Banino was leased to Brandt for 50 years, with the condition that the church be rebuilt. However, these plans were never realized, and the residents continued to attend services in the church in Matarnia . The Evangelicals from Banino, on the other hand, belonged to the parish in Karczemki .

Since 1818, the village has been part of the newly established Kartuzy district . In the 19th century, Banino was a manor village, partly owned by Bukowski and the German owner Emil Lupke. In later years, these lands were taken over by Jan Karsznia from Gdynia and Walter Goertz.

The latter, during World War II , employed prisoners of war on its fields, mainly from Yugoslavia.

War times and post-war reconstruction

The period of World War II halted the development of the village of Banino. Many residents were sent to concentration camps, were deported for forced labor or lost their lives fighting the occupier. The village was liberated on March 21, 1945 .

After the war, the residents themselves undertook the reconstruction of the village. New public buildings were built, such as the Health Center , Post Office and the Press and Book Club . The village was electrified, and new housing estates of single-family houses attracted new residents.

Administrative changes and contemporary times

Until 1973, Banino served as a commune, encompassing eleven gromadas, including Kokoszki , Rębiechowo and Bysewo . After administrative reorganization, it became part of the Żukowo Commune .

Today, Banino combines traditional values with modern development , undergoing an impressive transformation from a small farming village into a thriving suburb that attracts residents from all over the Tri-City.

Banino, located just 15 km from Gdańsk , is an ideal choice for people working in the Tri-City who are looking for a quieter place to live.

The dynamic development of infrastructure, including new housing estates, schools, shops and service points, means that the residents of Banino can enjoy the comfort of life without giving up the proximity of nature. Despite urbanization, the town still offers a space where you can breathe and enjoy peace.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Banino was still a small village with only a few hundred inhabitants. In the years 1936-1937, 574 people lived here, and the Banino commune included 5,020 inhabitants .

Currently, the village has changed its face, transforming into a modern town with numerous single-family housing estates, schools and a developed service and educational infrastructure.

Thanks to these changes, Banino has become one of the most attractive places to live in Poland, attracting new residents both from the region and the entire country.

The Parish of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Banino , founded on December 1, 1982 , plays an important role in the spiritual and social life of the inhabitants.

It belongs to the Żukowo deanery in the Archdiocese of Gdańsk , and its history dates back to the 13th century , when Duke Mestwin II gave the village of Banino to the Cistercians from Oliwa .

At that time, the first church dedicated to St. Michael was built, but destroyed by fire it was not rebuilt, and the religious life of the inhabitants moved to nearby parishes for many years.

A new phase began after World War II, when Father Józef Bigus took action to create a church in Banino. The church, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was completed in the 1980s and has since become the center of religious life in the town.

A modern parish is not only a place of prayer, but also of active integration of residents. It organizes catechesis, preparation for the sacraments and meetings of prayer groups.

The parish Caritas supports those in need by collecting food and clothing, and numerous cultural events, such as concerts and festivals, strengthen ties between residents.
