Introduction - a bit of history

Shooting is not only a sport, but also an art and tradition. In Poland, the shooting culture has a long and rich history, dating back to the Middle Ages. It was then that the first shooting and shooting brotherhoods were formed, which united the townspeople and the nobility, organized competitions and celebrations, and also performed defensive and representative functions. Shooting was not only a skill and entertainment, but also a symbol of honor and patriotism.

In later centuries, shooting developed along with technical progress and social changes. There are new types of weapons, such as pistols, rifles and revolvers. Shooting has become popular among various social strata and professional groups. Shooting clubs and associations were established to promote shooting as a sport and hobby. Shooting was also present in education and the army as an element of physical education and preparation for defence.

Unfortunately, after World War II, the shooting culture in Poland was strongly inhibited by the communist regime. Gun ownership was restricted and hindered by law and administration. Shooting was regarded as a threat to power and social order. Shooting ranges lacked funds and equipment. Shooting clubs and associations were subject to control and repression. Shooting disappeared from public and private life.

Currently, Poland is one of the most disarmed countries in Europe. According to data from 2017, there are only 1.3 firearm owners per 100 people. This is much less than in other European countries, such as the Czech Republic (16.3), Finland (12.1) or France (9.8). It is also much less than in the United States (120.5), where shooting is part of the national culture.

Does this mean that Poles have forgotten about their shooting tradition? Does this mean that shooting has no place in our society anymore?

Of course not! Shooting is still alive and well in Poland. In fact, it is getting better and better, unfortunately today it is an expensive sport and sometimes perceived as elitist. Moreover, myths related to shooting and owning weapons linger in society.

Safety - is the shooting range safe?

Shooting is a sport that can provide you with many emotions and impressions. But is it a safe sport? Are you putting yourself in danger by playing with firearms? The answer is yes, shooting is a safe sport, provided you follow a few simple rules and regulations of the shooting range. In this chapter, we will introduce you to the most important of them and explain why they are so important.

  • First of all, always follow the instructions of the instructor. The instructor is a person who has the appropriate qualifications and experience in handling firearms and shooting. He knows best how to behave at the shooting range and how to handle a gun. It is he who will introduce you to the basics of shooting and show you how to properly hold, aim and shoot a gun. He will advise you and correct your mistakes. He will take care of your safety and that of other people at the shooting range. Therefore, always obey his instructions and do not rebel or argue with him. If you have any questions or concerns, ask him at the right time. Remember, there are no stupid questions, but there are stupid questions left unspoken.

  • Second, always treat each weapon as ready to fire. It doesn't matter if there is a magazine attached or a round in the chamber. Each pistol, until it is dismantled to its first parts, is treated as ready to fire. Do not look into the barrel, do not touch it with your fingers. Each weapon must always be pointed in a safe direction, i.e. towards the target or the wall behind it. Never aim at people or animals, even if the gun is unloaded or secured. Do not play with the weapon or try to modify or repair it yourself. If there is something wrong with a weapon or ammo, report it immediately to the instructor.

  • Third, when you're done shooting, say "stop shooting" and wait for the instructor's confirmation. Then empty the gun from the magazine and check if the chamber is empty. Show the weapon to the instructor and ask him to check its condition. If everything is OK, the instructor will either take the gun from you or ask you to put it back on the shelf safely. Do not leave the station without the instructor's permission and do not touch other weapons or ammunition.

As you can see, if you follow these few rules, you are more likely to have a chandelier fall on your head than to injure yourself with a weapon. Shooting is a safe sport as long as you use common sense and responsibility.
