Crisis on the taxi market in Poland - thousands of companies suspend their operations

The taxi industry in Poland is struggling with a serious crisis "read: the passenger transport industry", which has led to the suspension of operations by 2,455 companies since the beginning of 2024, and almost 600 companies have completely liquidated their services.

A key factor destabilizing the market was a new regulation requiring drivers to have a Polish driving license.

This law has eliminated approximately 30% of existing taxi workers, resulting in serious shortages in the availability of transport services, especially in larger cities.

Passengers are already having to deal with longer wait times for taxis, and this is just the beginning of the difficulties the industry will face.

New tariffs in Warsaw – prices per kilometer increased by 66%

From September 22, 2024, Warsaw residents will have to pay more for taxi rides. New tariffs introduced by the City Council have significantly increased the minimum fares for rides.

The rate per kilometre has increased from PLN 3 to PLN 5, which means an increase of 66%. These changes are a response to the rising costs of doing business for taxi drivers, who have been demanding increases for a long time to meet expenses for fuel, vehicle servicing and other operating costs.

However, higher prices may further discourage passengers, especially at a time of growing popularity of ride-sharing applications such as Uber or Bolt.

The end of the “Mój Elektryk” program – no support for the purchase of electric taxis

In mid-2024, the “Mój Elektryk” program, which offered subsidies for the purchase of electric vehicles, was suspended due to the exhaustion of available funds.

Although the program enjoyed huge interest, taxi entrepreneurs must now wait for new sources of support, which are not planned until next year. Meanwhile, the development of the electric taxi fleet in Poland is at a standstill, and insufficient charging infrastructure is further delaying the process of switching to more ecological vehicles.

This is a serious challenge for transport companies that would like to reduce operating costs and adapt to growing environmental requirements.

Tesla Cybercab – a revolution in autonomous taxis presented by Elon Musk

During the “We Robot” event, Elon Musk presented a revolutionary new taxi – Tesla Cybercab , which could completely change the passenger transport market.

The Cybercab is a fully autonomous vehicle, with no steering wheel or pedals, meaning there is no possibility of human intervention. The interior consists of comfortable passenger seats and a touchscreen displaying route information.

Musk announced that the price of the Cybercab will be around $30,000 (PLN 120,000), and mass production is to start before 2027.

Cybercab will be available to both individuals and taxi companies. What's more, owners of the vehicle will be able to rent it as part of the robotaxi network, which will open up new revenue opportunities.

The vehicle also stands out with an innovative solution in terms of charging - it will use inductive technology, which will allow automatic charging without the need to connect to a socket. Tesla Cybercab has a chance to revolutionize the transport market soon , combining advanced technology with modern design.

The race between Tesla and Chinese companies for autonomous taxis may result in a faster, larger-scale implementation of this solution than we think.

Taxi availability problems in Edinburgh - industry warns of 'taxi Armageddon'

Like other British cities, taxi availability has fallen dramatically in Edinburgh, with rising prices and longer waits becoming commonplace, leaving passengers frustrated. The taxi industry is sounding the alarm, warning of a looming “taxi Armageddon”.

New regulations, such as those introduced in Poland, which eliminate a significant proportion of drivers, could soon inspire other countries to tighten regulations, which would deepen the sector's problems.

Uber and Bolt grapple with rising operating costs – changes on the horizon?

Ride-sharing giants like Uber and Bolt are sounding the alarm about skyrocketing operating costs in Europe. New regulations and growing competition from traditional taxis are forcing these companies to rethink their business models.

The year 2024 may prove to be particularly difficult for the transport sector, which may lead to further price increases for services and mass layoffs among drivers. Experts, "read: lobbyists," suggest that these companies will have to quickly adapt to changing conditions in order to maintain their position on the market.
