If you are planning to visit Gdańsk, one of the most beautiful cities on the Baltic Sea, you are surely wondering what the weather is like there. Can you count on sunny and warm days, or do you have to prepare for cold and rain?

The climate of Gdańsk - what do you need to know before you go to the Baltic Sea?

Gdańsk lies on the coast of the Baltic Sea and is influenced by the maritime climate. This means that the weather is quite changeable and unpredictable.

"It is quite common in the area of the so-called Lake Effect. It manifests itself in the fact that it can rain in Gdańsk and the surrounding area even when the rest of the country is dry. It is caused by the steaming waters of the warm Baltic Sea"

The proximity of the Baltic Sea also gives the area an exceptionally mild climate, temperatures in Gdańsk are moderate and there are no extreme heat or frost.

The average annual temperature is around 9°C, and the average summer temperature is around 18°C. In winter, the average temperature drops to around 0°C.

The weather in Gdańsk also depends on the season:

  • Spring is usually cool and rainy, but also full of charm. Blooming trees and flowers add color and life to the city. Spring is sometimes very capricious, in Poland we have proverbs that say about it: "In March, like in a pot" "April weaves something, a bit of winter, a bit of summer" "In May like in a grove"

  • Summer is the best time to visit Gdańsk and enjoy the beaches. You can count on many sunny days and temperatures above 20°C. However, do not forget about a "windbreaker" jacket or a sweater or sweatshirt for the evening, because it can be windy and cooler at the seaside.

  • Autumn is usually cloudy and damp, but it also has its own charm. Golden leaves and red roofs create a picturesque landscape, in Poland we often say "Golden Polish Autumn" or "Babie Lato".

  • Winter is the least favorable time to visit Gdansk, unless you like snow and frost. You can expect low temperatures and frequent snow or rain. What's worse, due to the rather mild climate, the snow melts quickly and becomes slush.

As you can see, the weather in Gdansk is varied and unpredictable. That's why it's best to check the weather forecast before you leave and pack so you're prepared for anything.

Don't forget a warm jacket, hat, scarf and gloves for the winter and a light jacket, umbrella and sunglasses for the summer.

Don't let the weather spoil your mood or plans. Gdansk has a lot to offer at any time of the year and you will definitely enjoy it!
